Object description
Under the photo is a Ukrainian-language signature in a simple pencil: "Ivanova, Lubkina, Skrylova 1940 Moscow". The photograph shows three female figures from different angles. The specific composition of the image suggests that the original was of a different format and that the surviving print is a cropped section of a larger photograph. It should also be noted that this may have been done deliberately, as the signs that could identify the room where the photograph was taken have been removed for unspecified reasons. Another reason could be that there were other people nearby in the photo. As for the peculiarities of the cut of the dress, it generally corresponds to the time indicated in the caption (early 1940s). The age of Antonina Ivanova in the photo may also be an additional indication in favour of the date (approximately 45–47 years old). The photograph is somewhat ambiguous in terms of its composition and the emotional and tactile aspects of the characters' communication (as defined by archival specialist Tetiana Dovhun). In particular, Antonina Ivanova and a woman some 10–12 years her junior (possibly Lubkina) exchange expressive glances of an almost intimate nature, which are not typical of everyday anthropological practice in the 1940s or 1950s in the field of communication between women. Also noteworthy is the gesture of the woman on the left (possibly Skrylova), who embraces Lubkina (?) around the neck with an expressive gesture. The peculiar angle of this person's shoulder girdle raises the question of the position of the people in the original photograph – standing or, for example, sitting. In any case, this photograph requires further research into the subjects' personalities and the rather specific context, which can probably be found in Antonina Ivanova's correspondence of the period.
