Object description
The Ukrainian-language caption on the back, written in simple pencil, reads: "In Paris: a photo by M. Boichuk? 1926". The photograph shows the Archbishop's Bridge from a perspective common to early 20th-century postcards, with Notre Dame Cathedral in the background. Given the location of the objects, the photo was taken in autumn (the leaves have not yet fallen from the trees, but the people in the photograph are dressed for the cool season). The photo was taken from an elevation on the eastern side, and the point of view suggests that it was taken either from the Pont de la Tournelle or from a nearby elevation that no longer exists. Regarding the date, the advertising inscription for the flavoured aperitif Byrrh corresponds to the 1920s and 1930s. The advertisements in the daily newspaper Le Journal also correspond to this period, in particular the issue of 16.08.1926, which used a similar typeface (https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k7624706j/f2.item). This dating roughly coincides with Mykhailo Boichuk's artistic travels with his wife and students to Western Europe, especially the Third French Republic (http://www.nbuv.gov.ua/node/4382).
People depicted
In the photo, more than a hundred people of different genders, ages and social statuses are captured on the waterfront, some of them engaged in fishing.
