Ruins of the Carmelite monastery-fortress of the 16th–18th c. The village of Susidovychi, Lviv region. 1975. Defensive and representative buildings owned by magnates always reflected the artistic trends of their time, the nature of warfare, and advancements in military affairs and technologies. Attention to representing one's personal political and social status was also a force behind the construction of this type of architecture. More information on this can be found in Orest Matsiuk's publication "Castles and Fortresses of Western Ukraine" (Lviv, 2005. 192 pp.), which includes more than 200 photographs taken by Volodymyr Olkhomiak. The architecture of masonry sacred buildings, especially during the reconstruction process, documents changes in artistic styles and even theological concepts. Volodymyr Olkhomiak's photographs provide an opportunity to explore the state of preservation and the features of reconstruction of domestic sacred monuments of both local and national importance.
