Object description
On the back of the photograph is an inscription in russian in a purple ballpoint pen: "Ivanova A.M. Girls in a cornfield. 1963 Moscow". The original work (Рз-433), officially titled "Young Corn Growers", is in the Gallery's collection, as are some preparatory sketches. This work shows the influence of the artist's practice in the 1920s, particularly the images of women working in the fields. However, the development of these images is also a statement about the changes in the process of agricultural work itself, where almost all activities are mechanised and human work is more focused on supervision. It is, therefore, difficult to interpret the images of the girls, the central one holding ears of corn in the lower part of her dress, as a reflection of work. Festive clothes and necklaces, light shoes and one of the women wearing a delicate wristwatch categorically deny the reasons for interpreting the scene as related to work. Instead, the events depicted took place on a day off.
