Object description
The images of the heads of cherubs, that is angels with wings, are almost the ancient ones. They were placed in altar compositions in churches. The winged heads of seraphim and cherubim can be seen in the interiors of churches, as all the free space in iconostases and altars was filled with them. The artists created a whole gallery of interesting character types with individual features. The cherubim were depicted mostly round-faced, with a small and sometimes double chin, smiling, and with a playful look. The sculpture of a cherub has a characteristic hairstyle formed of locks of curly hair, childishly cute chubby cheeks, as well as half-open small lips with a faint smile on them. In sculpture, the impression of movement and dynamism is created due to the slight asymmetry of the face and the shape of small wings.
