Biography
The Austrian artist Josef Kinzel was born in the German town of Lobenstein on May 4, 1852. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Engert, Blaas, and Wurzinger; he continued his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Gabl and Seitz. He later returned to Vienna. He was a famous landscape and portrait painter but preferred genre and domestic scenes. Three of his paintings: "Refusal", "Unexpected Rivals", and "Wine Tasting", were purchased by Emperor Franz Joseph for his private collection in the 1880s. Josef Kinzel died on August 4, 1925 in Spitz an der Donau, Austria.
Object description
Villagers relax at simple wooden tables in a spacious, shady village tavern decorated with green branches – light streams through the wide-open door. In the foreground, two elderly bearded men are seated at a table on the right, one with his back to the viewer, the other holding a newspaper in one hand and gesturing and explaining with the other. Five men are talking at a table in the background, with a young maid standing next to them. A lonely older man sits by the door with his head down. From outside the door, a girl, who has probably come to fetch her father, peers into the tavern.
Inscriptions
In the lower right corner of the painting is the author's signature: "Jos. Kinzel. Wien / 1900".
