Object description
The picture shows the Church of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha in the village of Staryi Dobrotvir, now in the Chervonohrad district of the Lviv region. The northern facade of the church, designed in 1927 but never completed, is shown here. The design of the church combines the features of Byzantine stone churches and wooden three-level churches. The Byzantine influence is evident in the layout: the footprint is similar to a square, there are three naves, each ending in a semicircular apse, and the central nave is longer than the side ones. The interior has four pillars that support the central dome. According to the plans, the church was to have three domes – a larger stone central dome and smaller wooden ones on the same longitudinal axis. Initially, in 1927, the architect designed a church with bright Art Deco features. Still, in 1935, he simplified the project by applying more restrained forms of classicism without changing the overall three-dimensional solution of the building. The project was completed between 1933 and 1938. The church is still standing today (2024).
