Object description
On the back of the photograph is an inscription in russian written in blue ballpoint pen: "Ivanova A.M. Mother. 1920 Kyiv". The photograph shows a horizontal graphic work by Antonina Ivanova with a linear composition on the theme of motherhood (a woman breastfeeding a baby). Horizontal figurative compositions of a similar type were part of the artist's practice; in particular, the Gallery's archive contains a photograph of the artist's work depicting a naked woman in a bathtub. However, one of the sources of the composition could undoubtedly be the images of Venus lying down, known from the works of Renaissance and later artists. In the practice of other artists from Mykhailo Boichuk's circle, we also find compositions similar in a formal linear approach, for example, "Drawing After an Engraving" by Tymko Boichuk (1918–1919, National Art Museum of Ukraine). Therefore, there is a possibility that this could have been a preparatory sketch for a print rather than a painting.
