Object description
On the back of the photograph is an inscription in russian, written with a purple ballpoint pen: "Ivanova A. M. Pioneer gardeners. 1928 Moscow". The photograph shows a painting (?) by Antonina Ivanova entitled "Pioneer Gardeners". The style of the original work is in line not only with developments similar to the search of Mykhailo Boichuk's circle but also with current trends in local painting practice (for example, Lev Yudin's "Beach in Ozerki", 1932). Questions of ideological component in the depicted subject are secondary. The main thing is working on the land, which is presented in a rather elegiac and sentimental way, without the monumental pathos and dynamism characteristic of the mature forms of the "Soviet style". The young people in Antonina Ivanova's work are not the future builders of "Soviet antiquity" but rather figures from the artists' practices of Mykhailo Boichuk's circle of the early 1920s. The quality of the photographic print does not provide comprehensive information about the tonal solution of the composition, and the lack of colour makes it difficult to identify details. Antonina Ivanova's archive has a tonally different version of the same photograph with a different date (1932).
