Object description
Below the photo is a simple pencil inscription in Ukrainian: "Ivanova A.M. Student. 1969". This work by Antonina Ivanova has a significant affinity, bordering on identity, with a painting by Mykhailo Boichuk from the Gallery's collection dating from the early 1910s (ФМз-Ж-309). Under different circumstances, it could be argued that this is a citing and repetitive production, if not the same one, starting from the commonality of types, angles, features of clothing and accessories to the style, which shows reminiscences of sacred art. In the present situation, however, we can rather speak of the reproduction of a visual memory association in which the source (the work by Mykhailo Boichuk) is particularly valuable. Given that the original work by Mykhailo Boichuk was in the collection of Yaroslava Muzyka, from which it came to the Gallery, it is possible that Antonina Ivanova had a photocopy of this painting, as the artist was in contact with Yaroslava Muzyka in the post-war period.
